Visit us
We have wines to share, and stories to tell. Our small vineyard is family oriented - with three generations living on the property. We are as excited as ever to share our wines - and our history in Matakana - within our new Tasting Room. We are open daily from 11am-5pm.
Wine Tastings
Heron's Flight was established in 1987. We are the only NZ winery exclusively growing and making the Italian grape varieties Sangiovese & Dolcetto. Our wines are produced on-site. With our Dolcetto, we create both a rosato and a red wine. With our main variety, Sangiovese,we produce 3 different styles of wine with the same grapes. Including a wine made in a 500L amphora.
Our Tasting Room is open daily 11-5, and is attached to our winery.
Tastings are organized in two flights:
Flight 1 - $10
Dolcetto Rosato ($30)
Dolcetto red ($35)
Volare Sangiovese ($32)
Flight 2 - $20
Reserve Sangiovese ($65)
Amphora Sangiovese ($120)
For casual visitors, these flights can be shared.
They are presented on a tray with written information on each of the wines.
All of these wines are also available by the glass in our Tasting Room.
Food Options
We have a small deli which stocks a variety of meats, cheeses, preserves, crackers etc from around NZ. These are all pre-packed and people create their own platters. We have cutting boards, utensils and everything you need to make a delicious platter.
Group Tastings
(We like to have a minimum of 10 people)
We specialize in group tutored tastings, These normally last about an hour. As we have been in Matakana since the 1980's, we have seen the development of the wine region and all group tastings include an overview of this history as well as a discussion of why we only grow Italian grapes and the origin of Sangiovese and Dolcetto in Italy. And, of course, a discussion of our particular wines.
Groups have two options:
Tasting A ($10/person)
Includes the three wines from Flight A above. Each participant has a glass and we talk our way through each wine.
Tasting B ($30/person)
This includes all 5 of our wines, which allows the participants to fully understand our winemaking vision and why we are so enthusiastic about these Italian grapes.
Any wine purchased following a tutored tasting is over above the initial fee.
Introducing our Eco Cabin accomodation
Nestled within an olive grove in one of Matakana's oldest vineyards, this private, self-contained 'off the grid' cabin makes a brilliant escape, or base from which to explore the region. Built from quality materials, the Cabin is equipped with all you need for a quiet getaway.
